August Tips

Alec’s Training Tip of the Month

Is your doggy suffering from the back to school blues? If your dog is restless when the kids go back to school it's because they are suffering from a loss of pack. Dogs are pack animals at heart so they quickly learn and enjoy having a larger pack during summer. To help your dog transition to a smaller pack for prolonged periods of time consider including your dog in the morning ritual of dropping off the kids. It will be fun for all family members including your pooch as well as offering them some understanding of where everyone disappeared to every day. However, if your dog displays signs of separation anxiety (pacing, panting, and destructive behavior) please call our trainers today to help you map out a plan for resolution.

Diane’s Grooming Tip of the Month

If you have a new dog, or old dog, which needs to get used to being groomed, here are some tips. Start off slow - pet your dog and brush the coat lightly with a gentle brush that does not pull the hair for just about ten minutes to get your dog used to being touched and handled. Make it a positive experience - praise gently with a calm and reassuring voice and when the session is ended offer a treat.  Gradually lengthen the time and the areas handled, gradually adding ears, tail, paws, belly. Pick a time for this when your dog is calm - such as after a walk, first thing in the morning, or last thing at night. To get your dog used to the bath, take him/her to the tub area again starting off with just a few minutes, offer treats, pet and brush him/her, praise gently.
